Hubbard School Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Statement
Each day, the Hubbard School of Journalism and Mass Communication continues its commitment to enhance diversity within our unit, recognizing that diversity is an asset to be cultivated as well as an economic and civic imperative. Looking to the future, estimates forecast that in just over 20 years, more than one fourth of Minnesotans will be people of color and their personal and professional interactions will be increasingly global. By emphasizing the role of diversity and the plurality of cultures in our University community, we aim to provide students and faculty with an increased awareness of perceptions of differences, with the goal of developing a School that is more inclusive both in structure and in curriculum, and thus better poised to address its core mission of exploring, expanding and explaining the critical links between communication and democracy.
Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in the Newsroom
At the Hubbard School, which is located in a major media market, we know the importance of newsrooms reflecting the communities they serve. Through research, outreach and internships, the School connects students with many diverse journalism partners, including Minnesota Public Radio, Star Tribune, Sahan Journal, Pioneer Press, Minnesota Reformer, APM Reports and more. Students also have national opportunities through the Dow Jones News Fund, among others.
Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in Strategic Communication
Diversity in agency, government and non-profit work is crucial to strategic communication storytelling. Through partnerships and internships, the Hubbard School connects students with many local agencies like FastHorse, Fallon, Colle+McVoy and more. Students also have national opportunities through the 4A’s Multicultural Advertising Intern Program, among others.
Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in Research
At the Hubbard School, we strive to create an inclusive environment that allows our faculty members and graduate students to thrive in a diverse society, work with diverse cohorts of colleagues, and excel within a community that promotes diversity of thought.
Alumni Mentor Program
For the last three decades, the Hubbard School alumni board has matched hundreds of students with mentors in journalism, advertising, and public relations through its Alumni Mentor Program. With an alumni and supporter base of nearly 10,000 members, the School is in a unique position to provide professional assistance to students.
Internships & Partnerships
The Hubbard School continues to add a number of specialized internship opportunities for students interested in community reporting by partnering with Minnesota Public Radio, the Pioneer Press, Sahan Journal, North News, the Minnesota Statesman-Recorder, and MinnPost. We also partner with local agencies such as FastHorse, Padilla, Weber, Carmichael Lynch Relate, Tunheim, Exponent and Hotwire to nominate students of color for internships and externships. Students can reach out to Student Services to find out more about these opportunities.
