Scholarship Application Deadline

The deadline for the 2025-2026 academic year is Feb. 7, 2025 @ 4pm. Apply below. 

Each year, the Hubbard School of Journalism & Mass Communication awards more than 100 scholarships worth nearly $250,000 to undergraduate majors and premajors. These scholarships are awarded based upon academic performance; potential for a career in Journalism or Strategic Communication; and, in some instances, financial need.

How do you qualify?

If you are a Hubbard School major and you are enrolled full-time, you may apply for a scholarship. Awards are for the following academic year and range from $500 to $6,500. Students coded by the College of Liberal Arts as pre-jour may also complete an application to be considered for pre-major scholarships.

Journalism

Asian American Journalists Association
The Asian American Journalists Association (AAJA) Scholarship is provided by the organization's Minnesota chapter to assist Asian American and Pacific Islander students pursuing a degree in journalism and mass communication. AAJA serves to encourage young people to consider journalism as a career, develop managers in the media industry and promote fair and accurate news coverage.

Brian E. Anderson Scholarship
The Brian E. Anderson Memorial Scholarship is for undergraduate majors in journalism and mass communication. The award honors Brian Anderson, a 1966 SJMC graduate who began his reporting career at the Minneapolis Tribune and later moved to Washington, D.C. to work as a speechwriter for Senator Walter Mondale. He returned to Minnesota in 1970, and in 1977 became editor of what is now Mpls./St. Paul Magazine, a position he held for 33 years.

​Elliot M. Baron Scholarship
The Elliot M. Baron Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a journalism major in recognition of outstanding work on a student publication. The scholarship was established in 1957.

Anita Beck Memorial Scholarship
The Anita Beck Memorial Scholarship is for an SJMC major or graduate student, whose interests are preferably in graphic arts or photocommunication. The recipient is selected based on academic performance and financial need. The scholarship is named in honor of Anita Beck, who started her own card company, Anita Beck Cards, in 1946.

Carroll Binder Scholarship
The Carroll Binder Memorial scholarship is awarded to a graduate or undergraduate student who shows promise in the reporting and/or interpreting of international affairs, preferably in the newspaper industry. The award is based on academic record and professional promise. Binder served as a newspaper correspondent and editor for the Chicago Daily News and Minneapolis Tribune. She also helped to launch the Minnesota Daily Star, a paper organized by labor unions.

Patrick Connolly Scholarship
The Patrick Connolly Memorial Scholarship is intended for a junior or senior journalism major interested in news-editorial and is awarded based on academic performance and journalistic potential, and financial need. Established in 1985, this scholarship is named in honor of Patrick J. Connolly, a 1965 SJMC graduate and Associated Press correspondent.  

Phyllis and Harold Conrad Scholarship
Phyllis and Harold Conrad Scholarship supports outstanding undergraduate student who demonstrates leadership potential and an interest in writing and editing. 

Peter and Elizabeth Edmonds Scholarship
The Peter and Elizabeth Edmonds Scholarship is awarded to journalism majors in good academic standing with potential in their field. This fund was established by Elizabeth Donovan Edmonds in honor of her husband Peter, a 1938 University of Minnesota graduate.

Herbert Berridge Elliston Undergraduate Scholarship
Hilma L. Eckstrand, a Minnesota native who was employed by Washington Post writer and Pulitzer Prize winner Herbert Elliston, established this scholarship in 1980 in memory of Elliston. The scholarship is exclusively for SJMC students.

Curtis Erickson Scholarship
The Curtis Erickson Memorial Scholarship is for journalism majors studying news-editorial. The scholarship is named for Curtis Erickson, a 1938 SJMC graduate.

John Finnegan and Pioneer Press Scholarship
John Finnegan and Pioneer Press Scholarship is intended for journalism majors who are in good academic standing, show academic promise, and have financial need. John R. “Jack” Finnegan Sr. was the editor of the St. Paul Pioneer Press from 1970-1985. He was a nationally known advocate for First Amendment rights and a champion for open government and access to records.

Hubbard Broadcast Scholarship
For undergraduate and graduate students in broadcast based on academic achievement and professional achievements. Hubbard Broadcasting has outlets across Minnesota, Wisconsin, New York and New Mexico with its flagship station KSTP radio and TV in the Twin Cities.

Hubbard Radio Scholarship
Preference for the Hubbard Radio Scholarship will be given to an undergraduate Native American student with an interest in majoring in broadcasting, journalism, communications, or a related field. The Hubbard family has a long and rich tradition of innovation and leadership in the field of journalism. Hubbard Broadcasting has outlets across Minnesota, Wisconsin, New York and New Mexico with its flagship station KSTP radio and TV in the Twin Cities.

Bette Jones Hammel Scholarship
The Bette Jones Hammel Scholarship is for a full-time undergraduate student who majors in journalism or mass communication, is in good academic standing, and shows potential. Bette Jones Hammel is a 1947 SJMC graduate who established this fund in 1998 to celebrate the education she received at SJMC. She is a noted Twin Cities author of such books as “Legendary Homes of Lake Minnetonka” and “Legendary Homes of the Minneapolis Lakes.”

Joseph F. Kane Memorial Scholarship
The Joseph F. Kane Memorial Scholarship is intended for top journalism students in editing or creative writing. The students may be either juniors or seniors. The scholarship was established by friends in honor of Joseph Kane, a reporter and general news editor with The Associated Press in Minneapolis, Washington, D.C. and New York.

Skyway News Kaufman Scholarship
The Kaufman Skyway News Scholarship is for junior or senior journalism majors in news-editorial. Recipients are selected based on academic performance, journalistic potential, and financial need. Sam Kaufman started Skyway News (now the Downtown Journal) in 1970 as a free newspaper published twice weekly covering downtown events and activities.

Beverly Kees Scholarship
The Beverly Kees Scholarship is intended for journalism majors with an interest in editing. Established by friends and colleagues in honor of Beverly Kees, a 1963 SJMC alumna who was one of the first female newspaper managers in the nation. Kees was a reporter and editor at the Minneapolis Star and Minneapolis Tribune, was executive editor of both the Grand Forks Herald in North Dakota and the Fresno Bee in California. She also worked as editor of the Post-Tribune in Gary, Indiana.

Fred & Lucille Kildow Scholarship
The Fred & Lucille Kildow Scholarship is for SJMC majors interested in careers in journalism and mass communication.  The scholarship is named in honor of Fred Kildow, a University of Minnesota faculty member for 37 years who retired in 1965. He is credited with co-founding the National Scholastic Press Association at the University of Wisconsin and with founding the Associated Collegiate Press at the University of Minnesota, and also for serving as director of both organizations for 40 years.

Kinderwater Scholarship
The Kindwater Scholarship is for full-time undergraduate students majoring in journalism, who are in good academic standing with potential in their field. Established by SJMC alumni Joseph (B.A. 1948) and Jacqueline (B.A. 1967) Kinderwater for their appreciation of their outstanding education at the University of Minnesota.

James M. and Audrey H. Kinney Scholarship
The James M. & Audrey H. Kinney Scholarship is intended for SJMC majors interested in print journalism and community newspapers. Established in 2009, the scholarship honors 1948 SJMC alumnus James Kinney, who served as editor and publisher of the Pope County Tribune in Glenwood, Minnesota.

F. Gerald Kline Scholarship
The F. Gerald Kline Scholarship is for students in the undergraduate or graduate program in SJMC based on academic performance, journalistic potential and financial need. Kline received his Ph.D. from SJMC in 1969 and served as a journalism professor at the University of Michigan from 1970-1978. In 1973 he published Current Perspectives in Mass Communication Research, a well-regarded source for mass communication scholars.

Steve Kopperud Scholarship in Business or Technical Reporting
This fund supports students, with particular preference for students who are interested in reporting, writing and advocacy communication reflecting Steve Kopperud’s life’s work related to science, agriculture, food, animal welfare, the relationship between food and the environment, government policy, regulations and advocacy.

Jason Leidahl Scholarship
The Jason Leidahl Memorial Scholarship is intended for students majoring in journalism or art. Students should demonstrate academic promise and financial need. Established in 1993 in memory of Jason Leidahl by parents Glenn and Martha.

The Minnesota Daily Alumni Association Scholarship
To provide payments to full-time undergraduate students enrolled in 15 or more credits each semester and are employed at The Minnesota Daily. Scholarships will be awarded in recognition of exemplary service to The Minnesota Daily. Selection will be made by The Minnesota Daily Alumni Association Board in consultation with the Hubbard School of Journalism & Mass Communication.

David Moore Scholarship
The David Moore Scholarship is intended for one theater student and one journalism student. The student should be full time and in good academic standing with potential in their field. Established in 1999, this scholarship is named for Dave Moore, a legendary newsman who began his career at WCCO in radio and later became the station’s nightly newscaster for nearly 30 years.

Lee Ann Norman Memorial Scholarship
The Lee Ann Norman Scholarship is awarded to a junior or senior in the broadcast journalism program. The award is based on academic performance, journalistic potential, and financial need. Established in 1986, this scholarship is named for the 1975 SJMC graduate who worked at Storer Cable Television. Before that, she worked for Capitol City Cablevision in St. Paul and was a writer for Twin Cities Reader.

Robert and Joan Owens Scholarship Fund
The Robert & Joan Owens Scholarship supports undergraduate students with an interest or declared major in journalism. It is awarded to recipients based on academic standing and outstanding potential in their field. This scholarship was established in celebration of the undergraduate years of Robert Owens, who graduated in 1939.

Press Women of Minnesota Scholarship
The Press Women of Minnesota Scholarship is intended to help women advance in areas of reporting and editing. The scholarship is for an SJMC major or pre-major and is based on academic performance and journalistic potential. 

Otto Quale Scholarship
The Otto Quale Scholarship is for an outstanding SJMC major or graduate student; its based on academic performance, journalistic potential, and financial need.This scholarship was established in 1988 in memory of Otto Quale, a 1940 SJMC alumnus who helped found the American Yearbook Company, a division of Josten’s. In 1968 he returned to the University of Minnesota to teach public relations. He also headed two national school press associations and published Scholastic Editor, a journalism magazine.

Harold Roitenberg Scholarship
The Harold Roitenberg Scholarship provides tuition support to a journalism major. In honor of Roitenberg’s 50th birthday, friends established this scholarship in his name. The 1949 SJMC alumnus founded Creative Merchandising & Publishing, which grew into the largest catalog-showroom merchandiser in the world.

Archie Salyards Scholarship
The Archie Salyards Memorial Scholarship is intended for SJMC majors in news-editorial. Preference will be given to students from the Duluth area or northeastern Minnesota. Archie Salyards was a distinguished editor of the Duluth News-Tribune and Herald.

Larry D. Schmidt Scholarship
The Larry D. Schmidt Endowed Scholarship Fund is for full-time journalism majors with an emphasis in news reporting and/or investigative reporting. Established by family and friends in 1998 in memory of Larry Schmidt, longtime investigative reporter and producer at WCCO-TV. Schmidt represented the best of journalism’s core values: unbiased reporting, thorough research, painstaking fact checking and integrity.

David Donhowe Shippee Memorial Fund
The David Donhowe Shippee Memorial Fund supports visual communication students who are juniors, seniors or graduate students. Recipients are selected based on academic performance, financial need and journalistic potential. This award is in memory of David Shippee, a 1981 SJMC graduate and talented photographer who died suddenly at the age of 29 after developing altitude sickness on a photography expedition.

Diane Siegel-Lund Investigative Journalism Scholarship
Students are eligible to be considered for this award if they are: a) attending the University of Minnesota Twin Cities; b) undergraduate degree seeking students in their junior or senior year of study; c) enrolled in the College of Liberal Arts; d) studying toward a degree in the area of Journalism; e) primary preference will be given to students with an interest in investigative reporting. This award may be renewable to the recipient, provided the recipient demonstrates satisfactory progress toward a degree and continues to meet the criteria of the award.

David Silverman Memorial Scholarship
The David Silverman Memorial Scholarship is intended for SJMC junior or senior majors or graduate students in news-editorial who have a B average and show promise of outstanding professional performance. Financial need will be taken into consideration. The scholarship is named in honor of David Silverman, who began his long newspaper career as a reporter at the Duluth News-Tribune and later held editor positions at the Minneapolis Star and Tribune.

Mary Jane Sokolowski-Gustafson Memorial Scholarship
The Mary Jane Sokolowski-Gustafson Memorial Scholarship is intended for a female journalism major in the news-editorial program who has expressed interest in community journalism, weekly newspapers or small daily newspapers. Selection is based upon academic performance, journalistic potential, and financial need. The scholarship was established in 1990 in memory of Mary Jane Sokolowski-Gustafson, a 1942 SJMC graduate who served as editor of Brooklyn Center’s weekly newspaper Northwest News for 27 years.

Mike Steele Arts Criticism Scholarship
The Mike Steele Arts Criticism Scholarship seeks to enhance arts criticism by helping to expand the vision of future arts critics and is intended for journalism students with additional interests in performing arts. Mike Steele served as the cultural reporter and critic for the Minneapolis Star Tribune from 1966 until his retirement in 1999.

Hattie Steinberg Scholarship
The Hattie Steinberg Scholarship supports an undergraduate journalism student in good academic standing who demonstrates potential in the field. The scholarship was created by New York Times columnist and author Thomas Friedman in honor of his St. Louis Park (Minnesota) High School journalism teacher Hattie Steinberg, who received her master’s degree in mass communication from SJMC in 1963.

Howie Stillman Young Leadership Fund
The Howie Stillman Young Leadership Award is for an SJMC major with a strong academic record with preference given to students in print or broadcast journalism. Financial need should be a criterion. It was established in 1991 in honor of Howie Stillman, who died in 1986 at the age of 23 after a battle with Lymphoma. Stillman had the dream of becoming a journalist and attended classes at the University of Minnesota.

Charles Sweningsen Scholarship
The Charles Sweningsen Scholarship supports journalism majors interested in pursuing a career in editing. Charles Sweningsen is a 1947 SJMC graduate who served as editor-in-chief of the Minnesota Daily and had a lengthy career in newspapers, most notably at the Chicago Sun Times, where he held a number of editing positions.

William F. White Memorial Scholarship
The William F. White Memorial Scholarship is for SJMC majors, preferably news-editorial students, with preference given to undergraduates. The award is based on academic performance, journalistic potential, and financial need. A 1949 SJMC alumnus, William White served as business manager of the Winona Daily News in 1951 and later purchased the paper and served as publisher and president of its parent company until 1981. He was known for his editorials, columns, and community service.

High School Publications Scholarship 
The High School Publications Scholarship is intended for an entering freshman who plans to major in journalism. Preference is given for a student intending to pursue a program of study in news-editorial.

Journalism Alumni Society Scholarship 
The Journalism Alumni Society Scholarship is for a pre-major student who is interested in journalism. Recipient is chosen based on academic scholarship, demonstrated interest in journalism, and vocational promise.

Jon Bream Scholarship for Arts Criticism
The John Bream Scholarship for Arts Criticism supports students who are interested in arts criticism through funding and mentorship opportunities. Jon Bream has worked for the Star Tribune as a music critic covering popular music since 1974. He is the longest current tenured full-time pop music critic at a daily newspaper in the United States.

James Barden Scholarship
This scholarship was created in 1970 in the memory of the educational efforts of James S. Barden, who served the faculty and students of SJMC for five years. This scholarship is for undergraduate majors whose principal interest is advertising.

Thomas F. Barnhart Memorial Scholarship
The Thomas F. Barnhart Memorial Scholarship is given to visual communication/graphic arts students based on performance, potential and financial need. Thomas F. Barnhart was a faculty member at SJMC from 1931 until his death in 1953, when this scholarship was established. His specializations were in community newspapers, typography, graphic arts, and advertising. In 1987, former Barnhart student and SJMC alumnus Mark Wexler made a major gift to the fund in appreciation of Dr. Barnhart’s support and encouragement.

Thomas Bartikoski Memorial Scholarship in Public Relations
The Thomas Bartiskoski Memorial Scholarship is intended to provide financial assistance to students with career interest in public affairs communications who have established records of academic excellence and leadership as evidenced by active participation in the Williard Thompson chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA). Established in 2002, this award honors the career of Thomas Bartikoski, a 1972 SJMC graduate who was a nationally recognized leader in public affairs communication and credited with helping to establish national standards for accreditation for the public relations profession.

BBDO Scholarship
The BBDO Scholarship supports major or pre-major students whose principal interest area is advertising The recipient is selected based on academic performance, demonstrated interest in advertising, and potential. Financial need may be taken into consideration. The Minneapolis advertising agency established the scholarship in 1991.

David Floren Scholarship
The David Floren Fund is intended for an SJMC major studying advertising. Floren, a 1964 alumnus, is the former president of Martin William Advertising, Inc., who established the scholarship to support the SJMC's advertising program.

Patricia and William Greer Scholarship
The Patricia and William Greer Scholarship is awarded to SJMC majors with a special interest in advertising, in good academic standing, and with outstanding potential in their field. This scholarship was established in 2002 in honor of William Greer, a 1950 graduate of SJMC. “Bill” was a copywriter at Campbell Mithun and BBDO before becoming director of public relations and advertising for the Northern Pacific Railroad, which later became Burlington Northern.

Brad Johnson Memorial Scholarship
The Brad Johnson Memorial Scholarship is intended for an SJMC major whose primary interest area is advertising. The recipient is selected based on performance, journalist potential and financial need. The scholarship was established in honor of Brad Johnson, a 1958 SJMC alumnus who was an advertising sales executive for WCCO-AM radio.

James Keeler Sr. Memorial Scholarship
For strategic communication students majoring in public relations or advertising. 

Carol Ladwig Endowed Scholarship
The Carol Ladwig Endowed Scholarship provides financial assistance to students who are majoring in journalism and mass communication with a particular emphasis in strategic mass communication. Established in 2000, this award celebrates the education Carol Ladwig (B.A., 1967) received at SJMC.

Howard & Roberta Liszt Scholarship
The Howard & Roberta Liszt Scholarship is presented to SJMC majors who have demonstrated exceptional talent and leadership potential in the field of strategic communication and have distinguished themselves through their work in the Ad Club. Howard Liszt is a 1968 graduate of SJMC who served as CEO of Minneapolis-based agency Campbell Mithun from 1976 until his retirement in 2000. Upon retirement, he served as a senior fellow at SJMC and advised the advertising student group NSAC for regional competitions.

Chuck Porter Prize
The Chuck Porter Prize recognizes and encourages bright, talented students interested in advertising. Awards are given to juniors who are majoring in strategic communication, are in good academic standing and have demonstrated exceptional talent and leadership potential in the field of strategic communication, specifically in the areas pf copywriting and/or art direction. The scholarship is named for 1967 SJMC graduate Chuck Porter, who founded Crispin, Porter + Bogusky, an advertising firm with offices in London, Denver, Los Angeles, and more.

Helen Beggs Scholarship
For the support of undergraduates with need and merit in the strategic communication track, with an emphasis in public relations.

Barbara Beerhalter Scholarship in Strategic Communication
The Barbara Beerhalter Scholarship in Strategic Communication provides awards to undergraduate students pursuing strategic communication who demonstrate financial need and academic merit. Preference will be given to students who contribute to student body diversity, particularly female students if they are underrepresented at the University or in the applicable major. Barbara Beerhalter was morning news editor for WCCO Radio, public relations director for the Mnnesota AFL-CIO, managing editor of the St. Paul Union Advocate and an author.

Scott Meyer Scholarship
The Scott Meyer Scholarship provides financial support to full-time or part-time undergraduate students studying strategic communication who demonstrate academic merit and financial need. Scott Meyer was a founding member of Twin Cities agency Mona Meyer McGrath and helped the agency grow into Minnesota's largest public relations firm. When it became part of the Shandwick International network, Meyer served as CEO of Shandwick International and later chief strategy office of the successor firm Weber Shandwick. Meyer has held roles at the University of Minnesota and is currently chief advancement officer for the College of Liberal Arts.

Keith H. Anderson Scholarship in Journalism and Mass Communication
To provide funding for scholarships to attract the strongest new students to the Hubbard Schoo and to provide support for worthy students at all stages of their undergraduate work.

Anita Beck Memorial Scholarship
Interest from the account will be used to fund a scholarship for a Hubbard School major or graduate student, preferably whose interests are in graphic arts or visual communication. The Hubbard School scholarship committee will select the recipient based on performance, and financial need.

Gertrude Berndt Scholarship
Per the Donor's will: "to be used for the benefit of the students and faculty." Based on Donor history the fund was designated to CLA and the Hubbard School for use. At this time CLA has designated the fund to be used to support undergraduate or graduate fellowships for students studying in fields of journalism or strategic communications.

Director's Award 
Director's Awards are provided at the discretion of the director of the School of Journalism and Mass Communication in recognition of superior academic achievement.

Judy Conrad and Jim Stai Study Abroad Scholarship
To provide support to students and to be eligible for consideration, the students shall be: a) undergraduate students, b) enrolled in the College of Liberal Arts, c) majoring in the Hubbard School d) able to demonstrate financial need and academic merit, e) participating in a University approved study abroad experience.  

Ben Fouquette Memorial Scholarship
To provide financial assistance to undergraduate students in the Hubbard School of Journalism and Mass Communication (HSJMC), who are able to demonstrate financial need and academic merit. 

Mark Hopp Memorial Scholarship
The Mark Hopp Memorial Scholarship is intended for SJMC majors in good academic standing with potential in their field. The scholarship was established in 2001 in honor of Mark Hopp, founder of the Twin Cities Reader and an accomplished leader in community journalist and publishing.

Dave & Linda Mona Scholarship
The David & Linda Mona Scholarship is awarded to an SJMC undergraduate student based on academic merit and financial need. David Mona is a 1965 SJMC graduate who founded Mona, Meyer, McGrath & Gavin, a Twin Cities public relations agency that was acquired by Shandwick in 1988. The firm now goes under the name of Weber Shandwick Worldwide and Mona serves as chair of its Minneapolis office.

Herbert Berridge Elliston Undergraduate Scholarship
The Herbert Berridge Elliston Undergraduate Scholarship is exclusively for SJMC seniors and graduate students based on a student's integrity, academic standing and financial need. Hilma L. Eckstrand, a Minnesota native who was employed by Washington Post writer, and Pulitzer Prize winner Herbert Elliston, established this scholarship in 1980 in memory of Elliston.

Clayton Kaufman Scholarship
To be used at the discretion of the director to provide financial assistance and other support to undergraduate students. This use is not limited to scholarships and may include: scholarships, paid internships, and special projects specifically undertaken for the support of undergraduate students.

Don R. and Carole J. Larson Scholarship
To provide financial support to students who are full-time, undergraduates, enrolled in the College of Liberal Arts, studying in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication, who demonstrate financial need and academic merit, the award may be renewable, provided the recipient demonstrates satisfactory progress toward a degree.

Albert R. Tims Undergraduate Scholarship
Scholarships for undergraduates in the School of Journalism and Mass Communications.

Ryan & Susan Young Scholarship
The Ryan & Susan Young Scholarship is intended for newly-admitted students interested in pursuing a journalism major who demonstrate academic promise and financial need. Susan Young is an award-winning advertising creative and currently senior vice president and group creative director at McCann XBC. Ryan Young is an entrepreneur with over 20 years experience in technology strategy, management and operations.

Yuzer-Klatt Award for Conservation & Environmental Journalism & Strategic Communication
To provide financial support to students and to be eligible for consideration, the students shall be: a) undergraduate students, b) enrolled in the College of Liberal Arts, c) studying toward their degree in Journalism. Preference will be given first for students who are participating in a University approved internship experience in journalism or strategic communication focused in the broad field of conservation and/or the environment. If no eligible candidates are identified, then secondary preference will be given for students with a strong academic achievement and demonstrated interest in conservation and/or environmental journalism or advocacy.  


 

How do I apply for a Hubbard School scholarship?

The Hubbard School Scholarship application is available to our majors in January for the following academic year. You only have to fill out one application to be considered for all Hubbard School scholarships.

The Hearst Journalism Awards program is a multi-level awards program that features scholarship money for the winners. To be considered for an award, students must first submit their entries to the designated contact in the Hubbard School.

Undergraduate Research Funds Grant Application

The Hubbard School is pleased to provide undergraduate students an opportunity to apply for Undergraduate Research funds. Undergraduate Research grants are designed to help support academic research projects with a priority placed on requests for Honors thesis and Honors project research. Why I Give: Jill Braaten (B.A. '91)

Have you ever benefited from the kindness and generosity of someone else? For Jill Braaten the answer is easy; she has benefited greatly. One particularly significant act of generosity came to when she was a young student entering the Journalism School at the University of Minnesota, and it has impacted her life ever since.
