Rachel takes advantage of all the Hubbard School has to offer.
Why did you decide to pursue your major?
I decided to pursue journalism because I love telling stories. I grew up doing creative writing and my passion for fiction writing evolved into a passion for journalism. I love finding stories within real people.
What has been your favorite part of your experience at the Hubbard School?
My favorite part of being at the Hubbard School is definitely all the different opportunities within the school. Everyone at the school sets students up for success with different professional development opportunities and promoting internships to students.
Which course or professor would you recommend to other students in your major?
I would recommend taking JOUR 3102 (Multimedia Production) because it really broadened my horizons and helped me look at journalism beyond print.
What minors, internships, or activities are you pursuing outside of your major? How do you think these enhance your majors and/or your future career plans?
I am a double major with journalism and Spanish which I think has helped me be able to communicate with people who have backgrounds different from my own and helped me be a more compassionate reporter. I also work at the Minnesota Daily and did the Hubbard Reporting Experience for the summer of 2024, both of which I think helped simulate the newsroom environment well.
What advice do you have for future Hubbard students?
Take advantage of everything Hubbard has to offer!
What is one aspect of your major that has surprised you?
How tight-knit the program is. Going to a school as big as UMN I really expected my classes to feel disconnected but I’ve found there’s a really wonderful community in Hubbard.
