Major
Journalism

Why did you decide to pursue your major?
I decided to pursue my major because everyone has a story to tell. Humans are so individually interesting; knowing I can tell others about people is exciting. I also want to do my part in fact-checking the people in charge and providing the most accurate information. I am just so passionate about journalism and cannot wait to report.

What has been your favorite part of your experience at the Hubbard School?
My favorite part is connecting with professionals. In every class I have had at the Hubbard School, a professional in the industry has come in to talk to the class and answer questions. Everyone is always so nice and willing to help.

Which course or professor would you recommend to other students in your major?
I recommend Seth Richardson. People think he is blunt but he only wants the best for you. He will teach you how to write like a journalist, interview, work on deadline, how AP style works and everything else involved with becoming a journalist. He will change your life.

What minors, internships, or activities are you pursuing outside of your major? How do you think these enhance your majors and/or your future career plans?
Outside of my major, I am a Senior City Desk Staff Reporter at The Minnesota Daily. I have worked there for almost a year. I also participated in the Hubbard Reporting Experience this past summer and turned over video packages in a day. This experience enhances my future career plans because I am interested in broadcast journalism and want to become a news anchor. Learning how to create these packages helped me learn how to tell stories effectively.

What advice do you have for future Hubbard students?
You are not behind. You may see people who have already worked in a newsroom, had an internship or have published clips and think ‘I am so behind everyone else.’ You are not. You are exactly where you should be. Your life is on the right path.

What is one aspect of your major that has surprised you?
One aspect that surprised me is how willing people are to talk to you for a class project or story you’re writing. Lots of people want their stories to be told and will agree to be interviewed. All you have to do is reach out.
