Nashat encourages students to get involved.
What did you decide to pursue your major?
The main reason why I decided to pursue the Strategic Communication major is because I love how we are taught many different ways to creatively and analytically create messages for our audiences. I also really like how in every class I have taken at the Hubbard School, I have learned the ethics behind the tactics communicators use. This has given me the knowledge to strive to become an ethical and trustworthy PR practitioner.
What has been your favorite part of your experience at the Hubbard School?
My favorite part of my experience at the Hubbard School is connecting with the students, professors, and other faculty. Every conversation that I have had at the Hubbard School has genuinely taught me something. Our professors and educators have so much knowledge and wisdom about the AD/PR industry and the students are very passionate about their futures. I feel very inspired and thankful to have formed a community at Hubbard.
Which course or professor would you recommend to other students in your major?
I highly recommend students to take a class with Jill Bonham. She always encourages her students academically and professionally and is always willing to seek opportunities for everyone. Jill is highly knowledgeable about public relations and is the advisor for PRSSA UMN. So if you have any questions about the industry or PRSSA, please ask her! For courses, I think taking Jour 3279W: Professional Writing for Strategic Communications is a great way to add amazing pieces of work to your portfolio!
What minors, internships, or activities are you pursuing outside of your major? How do you think these enhance your majors and/or your future career plans?
Outside of my major, I am the chapter president of PRSSA: Public Relations Student Society of America and a council member of PRSSA National’s PRoud Council. My experience as a PRSSA member has been personally and professionally transformative. I have learned so much about the routes I can take for my career. I have had the opportunity to network and attend local Minnesota PRSA events like PR North and national events such as the PRSSA Midwest district conference in Chicago and the PRSSA Leadership assembly in Seattle.
What advice do you have for future Hubbard School students?
Get involved and take advantage of the opportunities! You are in charge of your destiny, take initiative for your career, and utilize the resources the Hubbard School provides. The Hubbard School has many different student groups such as Ad Club, PRSSA, and Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ), and provides opportunities such as NSAC: National Student Advertising Competition and multiple networking events with professionals in the industry. I highly recommend everyone to explore and figure out what you are passionate about!
What is one aspect of your major that has surprised you?
I think it's amazing how career-focused the Strategic Communication major is. We constantly go into depth about the routes we can take in our careers and we get opportunities to gain skills with hands-on activities. After conversing with other students in other institutions, I am grateful for how much our school prepares us for the workforce.
