Why did you decide to pursue your major?
I had a super hard time deciding on what to do for my major. I was undecided for my first two years at UMN. Then, I took a course that was designed to help you decide on a major. After looking through the long list of majors, I finally decided to be in Strategic Communications because it was broad and it interested me. I didn't know a lot about the major when I joined, but after taking a few classes, I fell in love with it.

What has been your favorite part of your experience at the Hubbard School?
I think my favorite part has been how career-focused the Strategic Communications program is. It focuses on preparing you for life after college in a way that I know not many other majors do. Not only through coursework, but through the support from the staff, I feel like I am truly being prepped to move forward in my career after graduation.

Which course or professor would you recommend for other students in your major?
If you are interested in working on the creative side of an agency, I recommend JOUR 4242: Portfolio Development, as well as JOUR 3241W: Advertising Strategy and Creative Development. I also highly recommend JOUR 3102: Multimedia Production and Storytelling. 3102 is awesome. You get to record audio and video interviews like a real journalist. I also recommend taking courses with both Mark Jenson and Rich McCracken if you have the chance; both of them are incredible educators.

What minors, internships, or activities are you pursuing outside of your major? How do you think these enhance your major and/or your future career plans?
I am involved in quite a few activities at the U. I am a Creative Team Member for the National Student Advertising Competition (NSAC). I'm also a Treasurer for the Campus Car Club and a Photographer for Golden Magazine, a student-led fashion magazine. I am also a member of Ad Club. I think all of these opportunities allow me to become more well rounded, but specifically being involved in NSAC and Ad Club are huge resume builders. Ad Club has allowed me to make real-world connections with industry professionals, and we get to tour some pretty cool agencies. NSAC is an incredible opportunity that allows me to gain real agency-like experience and portfolio work.

What advice do you have for future Hubbard School students?
Do not doubt the power of your connections. Connect with every guest speaker that visits your class. Build your LinkedIn, resume, and portfolio. You should also connect with your professors. They are a super easy connection you can make.

What is one aspect of your major that has surprised you?
I mentioned this before, but I was surprised at how career-focused this major is. It truly prepares you to work in an advertising agency. The classes are heavily focused on that world and it allows you to be more prepared when you graduate.

What do you wish you had known about your career path before now?
I wish I had known more about the different roles within an ad agency. I understand the structure and hierarchy now, but deciding what path to go down is not easy! Research those roles early so you can figure out what you might be interested in.
