Major
Strategic Communication

Why did you decide to pursue your major?
I’ve actually known that the strategic communication field was the place for me since middle school! I’ve always taken an interest in the strategy as it relates to perceptions, implications, and persuasion. I think that words are the most powerful tool that we have and was originally hoping to find a market that would allow me to explore that. Through taking courses at the Hubbard School, I am uncovering the seemingly endless amount of possibilities provided by a Strategic Communication degree, each one more interesting than the last!

What has been your favorite part of your experience at the Hubbard School?
My favorite part of my experience at the Hubbard School thus far has been meeting and working with new people. Practicing strategic communication is often revealing of the way an individual thinks, and it has been a joy to observe how others express their creativity and demonstrate their specific strengths. This applies to my peers and classmates, as well as my professors! It is very evident that the faculty at the Hubbard School truly wants to see students succeed!

Which course or professor would you recommend for other students in your major?
I would recommend any course with Ruth DeFoster or Susan LoRusso. Both of these professors were key to my introduction into the Hubbard School, and I learned a lot about key values of the Hubbard School and have been able to confirm that it was the right fit for me. I’m looking forward to interacting with more Hubbard staff as I continue my education!

What minors, internships, or activities are you pursuing outside of your major? How do you think these enhance your major and/or your future career plans?
I just recently declared a minor in Psychology and intend to additionally pursue a certificate in Applied Business. My psychology minor will allow me to hone in on discovering why certain communication strategies are effective and others are not. My goal is to be able to support my strategic communication endeavors with psychological evidence, increasing effectiveness. My Applied Business certificate will open up new and exciting career opportunities and provide me with a business-focused perspective that will hopefully improve my strategic communication skills. In regards to activities, I would recommend that all Hubbard students join Ad Club!  Through my experience in Ad Club, I have been able to meet loads of new people — peers and professionals — and learn a lot about both myself and the advertising industry.
