Strategic Communication

Why did you decide to pursue your major?
I’ve always wanted to become a journalist. It was top of mind when I moved to the US. But after my first year at UMN, I heard about Strategic Communications and thought it sounded very interesting. I’ve always loved writing and creating stories, and I realized that those are skills I can use in advertising. That’s when I decided to dig deeper into advertising classes and enrolled in Account Planning with Mark Jenson, which changed my view of advertising (in the best way).

What has been your favorite part of your experience at the Hubbard School?
I think, the opportunities and the passion everyone has. All the professors I’ve had, my classmates, and the environment have been so vibrant. Hubbard School has much to offer if you want to get the most out of your education. Not only does the school offer high-class education, but it also offers opportunities outside of the classroom. There is Ad Club [to] participate in, NSAC, and so many fun events Hubbard School organizes. I would genuinely say that Hubbard School is a community and safe place for students who want to explore, learn, and become the best version of themselves.

Which course or professor would you recommend for other students in your major?
I cannot talk enough about Account Planning with Mark Jenson. If you are like me, who wasn’t sure what advertising is about, this class is for you. Mark truly introduced the concept of brand strategy, and he is such a great resource. I would also recommend Rich McCracken as a great professor who is truly passionate about his students and advertising. Jennifer Johnson is also a great professor who truly cares about her students, and I am currently enrolled in her class, JOUR 3241.

What minors, internships, or activities are you pursuing outside of your major? How do you think these enhance your major and/or your future career plans?
I am doing the leadership minor. I love the process of the leadership minor and everything I have learned about myself. I recommend taking the first leadership class if you have the time. Outside of my studies, I am part of Backpack Communications, and I am also part of the NSAC team 2024.

When I am not doing advertising, I am a student athlete and run track and field for the Golden Gophers. My event is short hurdles, and I love everything that track and field brings me. My goal is to continue my track and field professionally after college, but I would also love to work with brand strategy in any way possible. I’m not sure yet where I will settle after college. I might stay in Minneapolis, or I might move back to Europe.

What advice do you have for future Hubbard School students?
My biggest advice is to have fun! Take the opportunities you get and try multiple different classes. You do not have to decide what you want to do right away, and it might change throughout the process. Also, get help if you feel insecure and lost. There are multiple upper classmates, professors, or advisors who are here to guide you in the right direction.

What do you wish you had known about your career path before now?
That advertising is fun! And that it is about creating stories. If you love writing, advertising is a great way to use that skill. I remember clearly when I was little, I had a teacher who left teaching for work in the advertising business, and I was shocked that someone would do that. And here I am! Advertising is fun and so much more than just an ad on TV. Also, don’t be scared if you don’t know what you want to do. You will find a way to use your skills, and it will all feel right when you do. There is no right and wrong when it comes to education. You can choose and create your career path; at the end of the day, as long as you are happy, everything will be fine.
