Strategic Communications major, Emma Denzer, promotes learning beyond the walls of the classroom
What other minors, internships, or activities are you pursuing outside of your majors?
Minors in Leadership and Physical Activity & Health Promotion; Activities: Co-President of UMN Ad Club, Presenter and Strategy Team Member with UMN NSAC (National Student Advertising Competition), working as a Hiring Coordinator in the UMN Visit Office
What advice do you have for future Hubbard School students?
Challenge yourself to break out of your comfort zone and try out new experiences! My classroom learnings were definitely enhanced because I pushed myself to network and learn beyond the walls of the classroom. Also, use LinkedIn to meet cool people and treat them to coffee to pick their brain! People are surprisingly willing to help students and talk about their career.
What tactics do you use to manage school, work and life during the COVID-19 pandemic?
I swear by my Google Calendar and TeuxDeux app. Those two tools keep my entire life in order. I also plan out the upcoming week every Friday so that I can be intentional about work-school-life balance.
What course or professor would you recommend for other students in your major?
Strategic Communication Campaigns with Rich McCracken and Account Planning with Mark Jenson were my two favorite classes in the program. Highly recommend them and also joining NSAC (which Rich and Mark are the faculty advisors for)!
What do you wish you’d known before you started down your career path?
I started out as a Biology major in CBS at the U and didn't switch to CLA and HSJMC until the summer between my first and second years. I wish I'd known to be more open-minded to a major switch earlier on in my undergraduate career.
