In March, a team of SJMC students who took the Strategic Communications Campaigns class last fall got to see their winning PSA idea get filmed with Fox Sports North.

The final PSA (see below) ran on FSN throughout the month of April.

The collaboration was made possible by FOX Sports University, an education partnership program developed by FOX Sports. The program is in its fifth year of working with the University of Minnesota. Within the class, students are split into teams and given a prompt for which to brainstorm ideas.

This year’s winning team included Jonathan Suomi, Alicia Lees, Ellen Opacich, Hannah Houg, and Tyler Larson. They were chosen for their creativity and passion shown in their ideas.

“[They] impressed FOX Sports and the Minnesota National Guard with their creative ideas that celebrated military children for their resilience, and painted the children as heroes in the Minnesota community,” said Molly Stires, FOX Sports University Program Director. “The winning campaign ideas were presented with a sense of passion and positivity that left the whole room feeling inspired.”

Through this unique opportunity, the students were able to get a glimpse into the strategic communication world and their future careers.

"My experience while on set with Fox Sports University was incredible," Lees said. "We were able to be hands-on with the shoot, as well as get the feel for how the process happens for a commercial shoot. To top it all off, everyone was so welcoming and were excited to have us there. It was an awesome reward to all our hard work and to see our project come alive."
