Interview

What organization did you intern with?
Cummins Inc.

Where is it located?
Shoreview, MN. But my internship was fully virtual

How did you find out about the internship?
I was looking for summer internships and found Cummins on Handshake.

What were your responsibilities?
I was assigned to do both marketing strategy and marketing communication work. I created a portfolio view of a group of products with financial and product management insights. My other project was on creating an internal and external communication plan for a new segment.

What did you most enjoy?
I really enjoyed the culture and the people. Everyone was really welcoming and understanding, especially my first few weeks. I was really nervous at the beginning of my internship but the amazing people I met at Cummins helped me to find my voice and professional working styles that work for me. I learned that I really thrive in a place where I can connect with the people I am surrounded by.

What is something that you learned from your internship experience?
The biggest professional takeaway from my internship was learning about the different types of marketing and communications including corporate communications, marketing strategy, and marketing communications within a company. Before my internship, I wasn't fully aware of the differences among the various fields within marketing communications. I was able to network with people across multiple functions within Cummins to learn about their careers and positions which helped me to draw a clearer picture of what I want in my career as well.

How will your internship help you in your future studies/career?
My internship with Cummins has set me up to know what type of work I like to do and organizational cultures I thrive in as an individual. It taught me multiple valuable communications, teamwork, and marketing skills that I will be using in my future career regardless of what path I decide to take. I also met multiple career mentors who gave me helpful feedback, insights, and advice.

What's one piece of advice you would give other students about securing an exciting internship?
My best advice would be to put yourself out there and try new things. I really stumbled across my internship and ended up loving every part of it. If I hadn't applied because I wasn't sure I'm qualified for it, I wouldn't have gained the professional knowledge and experiences. Some of the best opportunities really come from unexpected places.
