Samantha Woodward

Intern at CNN

Major: Journalism and political science
Graduation year: Spring 2023

What organization did you intern with?
CNN

Where is it located?
Based in Washington D.C., but I get to work remotely!

How did you find out about the internship?
After going to a Hubbard-sponsored event that featured CNN anchor Abby Phillip, I reached out to the professor leading the discussion if they knew anyone who worked at CNN I could get in touch with. After getting contacted with a recruiter, a virtual position opened up and I applied!

What are your responsibilities?
I work on the KFile Investigations team where I do in-depth archival and record-based research into politicians. Our team scoops controversial stories and tracks politicians and candidate rhetoric, flagging news-worthy stories. I also assist the breaking-news team as well as the visuals team where I transcribe live events, compile data and assist in analysis.

What do you most enjoy?
I love that every day is different! The news cycle is a never-ending ball of chaos and with politics, there is always something being thrown at you. You are never bored covering D.C. and I'm so lucky I get to do it.

What's one piece of advice you would give other students about securing an exciting internship?
Never think you're not good enough and always apply to things you want, even if you don't think you'll get it. At the end of the day, they have to hire someone and there's no reason it couldn't be you. Worst case scenario, you get your name in the ears of people you want to work for one day, best-case scenario, you get your dream job: win-win situation!
