It's an opportunity for local journalists to attend the conference -- held in Minneapolis this year -- and for students to connect with professionals in the field
The NICAR conference -- Investigative Reporters & Editors' annual gathering of data journalists -- is headed to Minneapolis this spring, and the Minnesota Journalism Center is launching an opportunity for local journalists to attend.
We're inviting Minnesota journalists to serve as conference mentors for Hubbard School journalism students -- a role that comes with an honorarium to help cover conference expenses.
Here's what we're asking of mentors:
- Meet the student attendees over Zoom a few days before the conference
- Attend the full NICAR conference
- Set up a time to meet with students while you're at NICAR
- Be available after the conference for a quick call with the MJC team to debrief the experience
(We expect it to involve no more than two hours of commitment outside the conference attendance itself.)
Here's what we can offer participants:
- An honorarium to help offset the cost of registration and some travel to Minneapolis
- Connection with aspiring Minnesota journalists
- Partnership with the Minnesota Journalism Center
Interested journalists should fill out this form. We'll invite several Minnesota journalists to be part of this pilot program. We plan to alert applicants on a rolling basis, by the week of Feb. 24.
