Interview

With which organization did you intern?

CBS News

Where is it located?

New York

How did you find out about the internship?

My professor emailed me about a fellowship opportunity.

What were your responsibilities?

I interned at CBS News' 24/7 streaming service CBSN. I produced stories and helped with segments that aired on the show. I also ran the teleprompter and updated the anchors with their scripts or any breaking news materials.

What did you most enjoy?

The intern project, where I spent one week creating a news package, while also making the best memories with four other interns. To top it all off, our piece won and aired on CBSN. Executives and talents also hosted weekly workshops. It was amazing to hear about their journey and learn from them.

What is something that you learned from your internship experience?

There were steep learning curves but the experience taught me to be persistent during challenging moments. The stakes are high at the network. Therefore, any mistakes I made would reflect on everyone else. There may be things you can't always prepare for but you just need to find ways to rise to the occasion for the sake of your team. Without a doubt, this was a such a rewarding experience.

How will your internship help you in your future studies/career?

The stress that comes from a fast-paced environment helped me develop a thick skin and remain composed under pressure. Not to mention, witnessing such amazing work from the best in the business inspired me to be a better storyteller. I hope that someday I can provide the same quality of work as them.

What's one piece of advice you would give other students about securing an exciting internship?

Preparation is key. I visited the career services center multiple times to go over my resume and cover letter. I also met with people who have had internships that I was pursuing to gain a better understanding of what employers were looking for.
