Symposium on the Role of Journalism in Covering Public Opinion

Second in a three-part symposium series commemorating the anniversary of the Minnesota Poll

This Minnesota Journalism Center event — second in a three-part series of symposia commemorating the 80th anniversary of the Minnesota Poll — delves into the intersection between polling and journalism, examining the ways the news media cover public opinion, use representative survey data, and give voice to the public in their coverage of political and civic matters.

Since 1944, the Minnesota Poll has catalogued the opinions and perspectives of generations of Minnesota residents.

The symposium will be anchored around local and statewide news media organizations who have been instrumental in sponsoring and sustaining the Minnesota Poll over time, but it will also expand on these themes in a broader manner, engaging with a larger community of researchers across communication, journalism, political science, public opinion, and other fields.

Data, history and the archive: More about eight decades of the Minnesota Poll

The event is the second in a series hosted by the Minnesota Journalism Center as part of a larger interdisciplinary collaborative workshop marking the 80th anniversary of the Minnesota Poll, one of the longest continuously run state-level opinion surveys in the country.

Unlike the first public event on the history of the poll, we are limiting this event to invited academics, journalists, and select affiliates of the school to facilitate a more focused set of conversations among the assembled participants.
